Portraits
A portrait of your family, pets or other memory is the perfect gift to yourself or a loved one. Painted in Jack Chester’s iconic illustrative style, your custom piece can include all kinds details and layouts that reflect the characteristics and personalities of the subject/s that you want included. I use the term subject to reference a person or a pet.
Please read further for an extensive explanation of how a painting is made meaningful and let your imagination run wild one what your painting can be.
Personal
To make a painting personal there are many things that can be done to make every detail reflective of the narrative about your subject/s.
Consider what elements will capture what makes each subject easily recognised, what is iconic about them and a setting that captures a group essence like a shared memory or place they all live or visit.
There are also many options that don’t have to be realistic like a family picture on the moon, or something that references a movie.
Background
The background is what compliments the subjects of your painting. Consider these options for your background:
- Environment like bush, beach, city, home.
- Location like sitting on a couch in the living room, camping next to a river, a picnic in a field of tulips etc.
- Time of day like sunset, night, weather.
- The fauna that can be for its aesthetic, from a holiday or from where you live.
- Other things like cars, buildings, animals, paths, benches, pools, hills, rocks, etc.
Subject Position
Consider the pose, position and configuration you want subjects in. This helps capture the mood and emotions of each subject and how they relate to each other in the painting. Any pose or configuration can be created. Some ideas include:
- Subjects grouped together like in a traditional photo.
- Subjects posing in a different ways in the picture like one in the foreground, the other sitting on a branch and another jumping.
Clothing Colours
My style is very liberal with colour and saturation. When it comes to choosing the colour of a subjects clothes I feel it is best to use the subjects:
- Favourite colour.
- A colour that is of a favourite outfit.
- Colours that express an iconic element of their identity (work).
- Using colour theory which would be to assign a subjects clothing colour based on the meaning of a colour. This can be Googled.
Clothing Fashion
The fashion and style of a subject is a great way to express their personality or identity. Consider what clothing the subject is most easily identified in balanced with expressing who they are.
- A farmer might be blue jeans, a work shirt and a cowboy hat.
- A young child might be in a phase of only wearing dinosaur clothing.
- A lawyer may wear suits in both work and personal life.
- Is there a style and colour scheme that you want all subjects dressed in to give a uniformed vibe (white t-shirts).
Accessories
The accessories that compliment clothing are very important in capturing someones essence. Consider things like:
- Jewellery, hats, belts, hair pieces.
- Hair style, colour, position.
- Tattoos, piercings or other body modifications.
- Nails and makeup.
- Clothing brands (if wanting visible).
- Shoes (barefoot or closed).
- Bags (where on body).

Additional Cost Factors
Other factors like the detail of the painting may increase the price of a painting due to an increase in time.
Each painting size has a maximum subject limit to ensure that the piece is not over crowded. If you would like a smaller size with more subjects this can be discussed, but will incur an additional cost.
All paintings will have a layout design created that you will be able to see before the painting commences to ensure your satisfaction. Small changes can be made after the painting is complete, but major changes will require an additional cost.
Postage
Postage is unfortunately not included in the price of the painting. Paintings will be wrapped in bubble wrap and then have an outside layer of cardboard to ensure they are protected in transit.
The canvases that are used are a premium Monte Matte Canvas or other brands that are of a similar quality. I prefer premium canvases due to a thicker canvas material that will support the longevity of your painting.
